Your Stay

Welcome! We hope you enjoy your stay at Northview. Here are a few tips to get the most out of the home.

Wifi

  • Network: Northview
  • Password: mimosa20

Security system and cameras

When you arrive, the security system will be deactivated. The cameras on the garage and back porch will not record.

Getting in the house

There is a lockbox on the right side of the garage. After entering the code, press the top button down and the lockbox will open. To close, you do the same (enter the code, press the button down, and close the box.)

The front door doesn’t lock automatically, so please lock the door when you leave.

Entertainment system

There is a BluRay player and a Roku Ultra with most streaming services available connected to a 4K projector and surround sound system. There is a collection of DVD and BluRay disks on the shelves beside the fireplace. The system is controlled from a universal remote which should be in its charging dock on the table beside the couch.

Select “Watch Roku" or “Watch BluRay” from the touchscreen menu near the top of the remote: the projector screen will roll down, the receiver and projector will power up, and within a minute or so everything should be working and the remote control should operate as expected. If nothing happens, try pressing it again.

We have Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix and MAX. You’re welcome to use our accounts if they’re signed in.

You can also connect and watch an external device, such as a laptop, by connecting it to the Denon AV receiver (the black gadget on the shelves beside the fireplace). Select “External - AUX1” on the universal remote, or if the system is already on, just turn the SOURCE dial on the receiver to “AUX1”. There should be a cable on the shelf near the receiver: connect one end to the AUX1 HDMI input on the front of the receiver, and connect the other end to your device, either directly via HDMI, or via the USB-C adapter that should be attached or nearby. You should be able to select “DENON AVR” as a sound output on your device to listen through the surround sound system. If it’s not working, try disconnecting/reconnecting the cable.

When you are done, press the power off button at the very top left of the remote control: everything should power down and the projector screen will roll up. Replace the remote control in its charging dock.

Spotify

If you have Spotify on your mobile device and are on the Northview wi-fi network, you should be able to stream music through the surround sound system by casting to the Denon AVR-S910W device. AirPlay may also work.

Hot tub

Please enjoy the hot tub safely and responsibly! The hot tub is on the deck outside the master bathroom in the main building. The control panel is under the insulated cover. When you arrive, the temperature will probably be set to 80F and it will be in Economy mode (green light). A few hours before first using the hot tub, set the temperature to 101-103F and press and hold both temperature +/- buttons until the mode changes to Normal (red light). Put in one teaspoon of the Chlorinating Concentrate while the jets are running. The bottle is probably in the cupboard under the left sink in the Master (purple) bathroom if it’s not already out on the counter. Add another teaspoon after every few days of use.

Please shower before getting into the hot tub. Sunscreen, body lotions and deodorant can all leave a residue.

When you are done, lower the temperature to 90-95F to prevent the jets from running excessively until you are next ready to use it, and replace the cover. At the end of your visit, turn the temperature back down to 80F and press and hold both temperature +/- buttons until the mode changes to Economy (green light).

Wastewater system

The home uses a septic tank for wastewater. Please don’t put anything down the toilets except toilet paper (e.g. no sanitary products). Limit how much food waste you put down the garbage disposal. Don’t put any harsh chemicals down the toilets or other drains.

Heating and cooling

The HVAC system is set to a cycle to keep the house at a comfortable temperature throughout the day and night. You can override the target temperature at any time using the white control panel in the small hallway connecting the bedrooms in the main building. Press any of the buttons on either side of the panel to wake it up if necessary, then press the +/- buttons to change the temperature. The target temperature will remain set until the start of the next part of the cycle. If the temperature is constantly too hot or cold, or not reaching the target temperature, call Willi or Bianca.

The gas fireplaces (in the guest room and the kitchen) both work. Just a switch to turn on. Obviously turn off before you leave the house.

The fireplace is wood burning. There is kindling and logs you’re welcome to use.

Outdoor furniture

If the weather is nice enough, there are cushions for the patio furniture in the guest room closet (if they’re not already out). There are also some camping chairs you can use inside or out. Please put away anything you take out when you are done.

Garbage

Garbage gets picked up on Tuesday mornings. If you’re around, please put the bins out on the curb on Monday evening (we usually put them right next to the entrance to the driveway on the down slope of the hill, near the mailbox). Unless it’s bear season, in which case the garbage has to go out first thing Tuesday morning.

Odds and Ends

If you need a vacuum or broom, they are in a tall cabinet across from/to the left of the fridge.

Any food we have is available to be eaten. Please check dates as we’re notoriously bad at throwing things away in a timely manner!

The water in the master bathroom takes a crazy long time to get warm, so we apologize if you need to rinse your face with freezing cold water.

Before you leave

If you have time the morning you leave, please wash (washing machine liquid in the cabinet above the machine in the garage) and dry the sheets (you do not need to put them back on the bed). If you don’t have time to complete the load, you can simply pull them off the bed and leave them in a pile in the room.

Please make sure there are no dirty dishes but it’s fine to leave the clean dishes in the dishwasher.

Things to do

Cascade Canal Trail

This trail is just a 2m drive (or 15m walk) from the house. It’s not a circle, you just walk as far as you’d like and then turn back. There is a spur trail which comes off of it called the Orene Weatherall Trail which is a loop down into the shady valley and back.

Bridgeport Covered Bridge (South Yuba River)

This is about a twenty minute drive from the house. It’s a beautiful drive. The Bridgeport Covered Bridge is the location you’ll use for directions, but really you are visiting the Yuba River and not the bridge (although the bridge is historic and recently restored and also worth a visit). It’s really nice. Weekends are considerably more crowded (obviously). For instance, if it’s 73 degrees on a Saturday in April, you will want to get there on the earlier side because parking can be a real pain. During the week, it’s easy to park.

Deer Creek Tribute Trail

This trail begins in downtown Nevada City, and then continues down a mostly unused road until it reaches the actual trail. Super cool suspension bridge about 5-10 minutes down the trail and then the trail continues on. Highly recommended!

Downtown Nevada City

Quaint and your classic Old West Northern California Mining Town Where you Can Buy A $47.00 beeswax candle made by Elves. Like everything, busier on the weekend (place gets a decent amount of tourists).

Downtown Grass Valley

Another Old West gold mining town, slightly more real and not quite as overpriced and picuresque as Nevada City, but still historic, cute and fun to wander round.

Empire Mine

About a ten minute drive from the house. A former working gold mine, with a museum, old mining machinery and lots to explore. Really pretty gardens and a nice stroll. Learn about the environmentally cool and super healthy way of life that is gold mining. It’s actually a pretty fun place for kids to wander around.

Malakoff Diggins

A ghost town from the gold rush days with a small museum and hikes through the old mine workings. Well worth the 50 min drive. Make sure you take the slightly longer, but fully paved route, unless you’re looking for an off-road adventure.

Hoyt’s Crossing

Another spot near the river but wilder and less beachy than Bridgeport Covered Bridge. Hiking, small beaches, rocks to clamber on and multiple swimming holes.

Food - Nevada City

There are lots of restaurants I have not yet tried- let me know if you eat out anywhere that you really like.

Heartwood Eatery

This place is very simple but tasty. Lots of vegan, gluten free etc. etc. Kimchi bowls, quinoa, tempeh, chia seeds- you know the drill. Pascale really liked this place.

Liquid Gold Juices

We take Arlo here as a treat - lots of veggie/fruit juice blends. Very fancy (not like a jamba juice - more like a place to get cabbage, turmeric, ginger and celery juice) and not cheap. They do take back their jars and reuse them so if you happen to get some and drink them at the house- don’t recycle them, you can take them back or leave them at our place and we will return them next time.

Three Forks Baking Company

Yummy place. Best pizza in the area, nice side dishes, good beer, pleasant place to eat outdoors (under canvas) if the weather’s warm enough. Gets pretty busy at popular times.

Fudenjuice

Sort of food truck style - mostly vegetarian. It’s decent. I like their vegan BLT. Bowls, wraps etc. Tastes like it’s from 1977.

Dedrick’s Cheese

Nice Cheese. Not a restaurant. Just cheese. And crackers.

Treats

Ice cream place in DT Nevada City. Kids obviously love it. The mint chip ice cream made with fresh mint is excellent.

Lola

Upscale restaurant in Nevada City’s original and still very old-West feeling hotel, The National Exchange.

Food - Grass Valley

Meze

Super yummy Mediterranean restaurant.

Thirsty Barrel

Bar food: pretty tasty caesar salad, good fries.

Cake

Bakery that also often has sandwiches and soups. Also has fresh bread. Cute place and in an old bank.

Diegos

Mexican and South American food. Comfort food, pretty good but nothing to write home about (in my opinion). Willi and Arlo both really like it. They do have good french fries.

Holbrooke Hotel

Historic old-West hotel, bar and restaurant with the original bar. Very cool vibe, even if the food isn’t as good as Lola in Nevada City.

Most of the places I’ve mentioned do takeout of course!

Grocery Stores

  • SPD Market
  • Safeway
  • Save Mart
  • Briar Patch Coop (bulk, organic etc., also has a deli)

The produce is pretty meh at a lot of places, Briar Patch has mostly organic and all the other big grocery stores have some organic produce. Willi likes SPD, which also has bulk stuff. There is also Farmers Market in the area - check local websites.

Some random info

Saturday and Sundays there are gun clubs open so if you hear gunshots while you are at our house, that’s “normal”. You will also hear guns while you are on the cascade trail occasionally–once again–not hunting, just the gun club.
